The Brief

Bringing innovation to life through real businesses

West Midlands Innovation commissioned CMA Video to produce a series of 15 case study films, each exploring a different programme, approach or area of innovation across the region.

The films needed to explain what each programme does while showing what that support looks like in practice. By hearing directly from the organisations involved and the businesses benefiting from them, future applicants could better understand the opportunities available and what taking part might involve.

For this film, the focus was the West Midlands Resource Reuse Network, which helps businesses find opportunities to reuse materials that might otherwise become waste.

The main films were created for LinkedIn, with versions also shared on YouTube and other digital platforms.

The approach

Showing the process, not just talking about it

The Resource Reuse Network is built around industrial symbiosis. One business might have sand, metals, wastewater or other materials it no longer needs, while another can put those same materials to productive use.

Rather than explain the idea entirely through interviews, we wanted to show it happening in a real working environment.

On the shoot day, we filmed interviews alongside footage of staff carrying out their normal work. This gave us the practical detail needed to support what contributors were saying and helped turn a potentially complex subject into something much easier to understand.

The result

One story, with content built for different platforms

The finished case study combines interviews with observational footage from the workplace, showing how resource reuse can help businesses reduce waste, lower carbon emissions and make better use of valuable materials.

Alongside the main film, West Midlands Innovation received social edits for shorter-form use, the full interviews, and versions both with and without subtitles burned in.

The result was not simply one finished video, but a useful bank of content that could be used across LinkedIn, YouTube and other channels as part of the wider West Midlands Innovation case study series.
