Live Video Streaming: Are You Doing It? Are Your Competitors?

Live Video Streaming Are You Doing It

Live video streaming has come on in the last couple of years.  Really come on.  Who remembers the lady in the Chewbacca mask broadcasting on Facebook Live from her car?  At the time it was a Facebook phenomenon, well since the last Facebook phenomenon anyway.  But it did captivate audiences across the world and made the lady in the mask a star, for a time at least.

Whilst it made us all laugh, it did set the scene for a new style of video.  Something that takes video to a new level and, most importantly, fully engages with the audience.  There are plenty of articles and advice out there telling us that content is no longer what it used to be and we all need to take heed.  That its about the right content for the right audience and providing information, delivering interest and an overall better experience for your audience.  Well, live video streaming has evolved to address this – if it’s done in the right way.

We all know the familiar pose of an outstretched arm, holding a mobile phone while you talk to the camera.  The more sophisticated might have a selfie stick and the super organised may even have a tripod but it’s all still being filmed on a phone.  Now, with the right equipment it can be filmed professionally on high end cameras with appropriate audio capabilities and even vision mixing with multiple camera angles.  This now takes the live video streaming to another level.  What this means is you can now get the content, rawness and ‘on the spot’ engagement of live video streaming with the professionalism of a well made corporate promotional video.  So is huge.

Yes there is always the risk that comes with live broadcasting but now it can look amazing, whatever happens.  There is also the option to cut to an advert if something goes spectacularly wrong – or even keep rolling if it’s compulsive viewing.

So what are the trends of streaming live and where is it going?  Here’s a few statistics that show how the web is embracing live video streaming.

  • The live video streaming market is estimated to grow from $30.29 billion this year to more than $70 billion by 2021. (PR Newswire)
  • Internet audiences are viewing more live content than ever before – 81% viewed more in 2016 than they did in the previous year. (Mediakix)
  • 36% of internet users said they have watched live video online at some point. (eMarketer)
  • 63% of millennials have watched live content and 42% have created it, making this group the largest consumers and creators of live video. (eMarketer)
  • 80% of people would rather watch live video than read a blog. (Livestream)
  • The search term “Facebook Live Stream” has increased in popularity more than 330% since Facebook Live’s debut in August 2015. (Mediakix)
  • Facebook Live videos are watched three times longer than videos that aren’t live. (Mediakix)
  • In June 2016, organisations streamed almost 200 live videos on their Facebook pages—six times more than they streamed in the previous year. (Socialbakers)
  • Research on YouTube shows that streamers who generate content on a regular basis for a dedicated audience are likely to generate three times more income over a span of two to three years streaming, compared to those who produce inconsistently and have a less stable audience. (Streamlabs)

The point here is that this is what the online world are looking at right now and if it can be done at a level greater than a shaky mobile phone recording then it can really take a brand’s video offering to the next level.
