Do You Really Need a Script for Your Business Video?

Some clients come to us with a full script. Others just want to wing it. Most are somewhere in between.

There’s no rule that says every business video has to be scripted. But it’s a question worth asking at the start. Because how prepared you are can make or break how the video feels.

Let’s break it down.

When a Script Helps

If the video is tightly timed, contains specific messaging or needs to meet legal or brand guidelines, then yes, a script is a good idea. It keeps everyone on track and avoids missing anything important. It’s also useful for things like explainer videos, voiceovers or anything that involves animation. These formats rely on precision. You want the voice and the visuals to line up.

Having a script also helps when multiple people need to approve the content before filming. It’s easier to make changes on paper than on set.

When It Gets in the Way

Not everyone is a natural with a script in front of them. If you’re filming a talking head or customer interview, a written script can make things feel stiff or unnatural. It can also put pressure on someone who’s not used to being on camera.

In these cases, we usually work from bullet points or prompts instead. The message stays clear, but the delivery feels more relaxed. That’s what viewers respond to. Some of the best moments come when people speak in their own words.

Finding the Middle Ground

Often, we’ll work with a light structure. We agree on the main points, maybe jot down a loose intro and outro, and let the rest come out naturally. This gives the video a clear shape without forcing anyone to read lines. We can always clean it up in the edit.

It’s not about choosing between scripted or unscripted. It’s about finding what fits the message and the people saying it.
If you know what you want to say but you're not sure how to say it, we can help shape your message into a working script, or just help you hit the key points with confidence on the day.
